Each year, about a third of students who file the FAFSA are selected by the U.S. Department of Education for a process known as verification. The federal processor typically determines who is selected for verification, but if conflicting information is provided on the FAFSA, schools are also authorized to initiate verification. Being selected for verification does not indicate that you have done anything wrong - some people are selected at random. If you are selected for verification, you will be notified on your Student Aid Report (SAR). Additionally, Carlow's Office of Financial Aid will notify new students via postal mail and returning students via Carlow email if they have been selected. You may be asked to submit additional information or documentation before your expected financial aid can be disbursed and applied to your student account.
Many students who are selected for verification are required to submit transcripts of their tax information (and, if dependent, their parents' transcripts). Completing the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, however, may reduce the amount of documentation you must provide. Students who are unable to use the Data Retrieval Tool can visit IRS Get Transcript to request copies of their tax transcripts.

Because financial aid will not be disbursed until verification is complete, it is essential that you return your documents as soon as possible. Keep in mind that verification may result in corrections, which may change your financial aid award package.
